SEO or Search Engine Optimization has been the Achilles heals for most home business owners struggling to gain ranking for their web pages. Using these simple strategies you will improve your web-site performance and SEO strategy. In Google’s eyes, content is King and your ability to sit on Google’s thrown is based upon relevance.

In this article you will learn three methods for SEO strategy including types of keywords and where to get great keyword and research, and you will learn where to place your keywords within your text document and the value of link building: both inbound and outbound to enhance your SEO performance.

Keyword Tools and Research
Our first step is to determine the intent of our page reader and consider what our customer is thinking about when they perform a search. This is where you need a crystal ball. You should also realize that the markets are always changing so it would benefit you to continually perform ongoing research to determine if the keyword that you are considering and subsequently selecting continues to be appropriate as time goes on. You should also design each page within your website or Blog utilizing a primary keyword and a secondary keyword and create content around the keywords you have chosen.

Google has a free keyword tool, but I prefer the Wordtracker Keyword Research Tool although I use both. When you type in the intended keyword the program will search for the top 100 search terms including the one that you originally submitted. You may discover that there is a more popular keyword used which may alter your selection process. Wordtracker has a premium paid program which offers more in depth analytics. If you are taking you business seriously, keyword research creates the foundation to achieving relevance in your SEO strategy. Not only is Wordtracker easy to use, there website is full of useful SEO information written by some really great writers.

There are two types of keywords; “seed” keywords and “long tail” keywords. An example; a seed keyword would be “home business” and a long tail keyword would be “how to make money in my home”. The long tail keywords are more specific and show that a customer has refined their search and looking for a specific answer to a question.

Each page within your website should not be less than 1000 words and search engines ignore incidental words like; and, the, a, of, or and periods, comma’s etc. It’s ok to use singular, plurals and synonyms. Avoid loading too many keywords into your page or it becomes choppy and unnatural for your reader.

Now here’s a little trick that I learned to make your long tail keyword flow. Using the long tail keyword referenced above, you can create two sentences. Now here is my example – “Using a simple marketing tool I learned how to make money. In my home business I market numerous affiliate programs”. This is just one example of how you can be creative with your copy using one long tail keyword and making two sentences with it. At one time there was a rule that you should have between 5% and 7% keyword density in your copy but it’s simply not true. Sure, frequency will improve ranking, but with today’s sophisticated SEO systems quality copy rules. Besides, if you go overboard on keyword density it acts the opposite for search engine optimization and the systems will actually ignore your document.

Keyword Placement
Positioning your keywords is fundamental to attain good SEO strategy. Your keyword should be placed within the first three letters of your headline. If you have the ability to create a sub-header place a keyword in that headline also. Your page title should also contain your keyword. A good description can increase your click thru rate but some experts believe that the description will not improve your SEO ranking. It is a good idea to also include a “call to action” in the description section using your primary and secondary keyword selection.

If you are writing and Article and it calls for a summary, consider placing your keywords in this area as well but only if it makes sense, don’t go overboard. Always posture your copy as if you are speaking to a friend making sure that it has good content overall. Remember your page rank will depend on the content and relevance of the party making the request. Any document will rank on a multitude of keywords contained in your document and not necessarily as you planned so your intent must be specific for proper SEO results.

Link Building
Now here’s where it gets fun! For search engines to consider you valuable, you must have credible links. This is no different from “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are”.

There are two types of links; inbound and outbound links. Inbound links are based on content and promotion. Content links can be derived from articles, pictures, stories, Blogs, news and videos, all linking back to you. It can also be generated from free reports. In addition inbound links can be created through press releases, news letters, personal contacts, social bookmarking and article submissions. This plays a major role in you overall SEO strategy.

Link building is an ongoing process. You may want to create a list imagining what your fans would really like to learn about and related to your topic. By creating rich content, you will provide a reason why other sites would be inclined to link to you. The list you create may have a number of businesses or services or service providers that you have experience with that would create value to your reader. By keeping your site updated with new content it gives a reason for your reader to return.

Make a list and write down everything that you feel makes your site unique. If you could dominate the search engines, what keyword would best describe your business? As an exercise enter the keyword into Google. What 50 to 100 sites are displayed? Then divide that grouping into two categories. The first category could be your competitors and the second category could potentially be affiliates where inbound links would be feasible, or you may be able to publish articles or reviews where inbound links could be attained. By linking or being linked to these “Top Guns” you create instant credibility with your SEO strategy.

As a final word, always provide relevant content, share it liberally, and never, never stop marketing to gain search engine optimization.

Local SEO, also known as search engine optimisation, is a trending way to acquire traffic leads to small business sites. This a method where your website appears on search result pages when potential customers type in words or phrases that maybe related to your site. The words that people type in are called keywords or key phrases. These keywords are your core means to reach potential clients in your community.

To learn local SEO it requires certain skills to better understand search ranking factors on how to put your website to listings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Local search engines work well with a good local SEO strategy. In this case, a proper Local SEO guide from Local SEO services are recommended to get massive traffic for industry specific local internet marketing.

There are many SEO Guides available and here are the top local SEO advices that you can use:

First of all, good website coding and linking structure are vital for search engine optimisation. It is important that your site can be easily crawled by the search engines. Search engines crawl your meta tags and make sure that the right keywords related to your website’s content are in the right place.

Second is market research and data gathering. You need to find out what people are looking for in your industry niche and see what interests them. It doesn’t have to be a huge product but there are certainly micro niches that people in your area are looking for, and by digging in, you will find profitable nuggets in a specific industry. Some niches may have low traffic but has high searches; some may have high traffic but low conversions. By understanding the people’s interest in your industry and giving them quality information that can’t be found anywhere else is a competitive edge.

Third is about understanding the ins and outs of search engines by learning how to do proper keyword research. Keyword tools are important in local SEO to help you determine the most popular keywords and phrases that people use in an industry related to your website. You can distinguish buying keywords related to your industry to target prospective clients faster by using keyword tools compared to doing it manually.

Fourth, you need to update yourself with search engines algorithm changes. There are no magic bullets in the area since nobody knows completely the ranking factors. One can get wisdom by trial and error and observe what works and what doesn’t. However, there are certain principles that must be followed in local SEO for industry focused marketing. Google local may get half of the local search market because of their Google local business center which is responsible for geo-targeted Google local maps and local search blogs. But Yahoo local and Bing are important sites too, for your local SEO efforts. These search engines may not give out their secret algorithms but they give advice on how to take things and get noticed in the local industry results pages.

It is important to test every SEO strategy that you employ. There is a traffic tracking program available that you can use to know if your SEO tactics are working or not. Google analytics for example is available for free to install in your website. It gives you daily information on how your site is doing, from where your visitors are coming from, and what are the keywords that they are using to find your site in organic local listings. In this way, you can easily adjust your marketing strategies in real time as you can see different movement of results everyday.

While there may not be chiseled rock tablets with SEO commandments, there are certainly deadly search engine optimization sins. While you won’t risk eternal damnation by breaking them, you are putting your online marketing efforts at risk. This article will take a look at 7 mistakes people commonly make. Avoid these mistakes and you will see your SEO efforts pay off more quickly and effectively.

1. Static HTML Website – Yes you can still rank on the search engines with these, but a CMS or blogging platform like WordPress makes it so much easier. Besides the fact that Google generally ranks WordPress sites higher, they are also much easier to add content too. Google loves content!

2. One for One Reciprocal Links – This is an old school method of link building and it has definitely lost its luster. Google caught on to this method and developed updates to their algorithm to make these fairly ineffective. If you trade a link with someone, they basically cancel each other out. They can still be good for traffic, but not for SEO purposes.

3. Not Updating Your Site – Remember Google loves fresh content. If content is fresh it will be counted as more relevant. Google wants to bring its users the most relevant searches it can. An article about new cars written today is more relevant by nature, than one written 5 years ago.

4. Submitting Sites to Search Engines – For the most part there is only one search engine you care about – Google, so why bother submitting to the other ones? In fact there is no reason to submit your site to Google either. All of the major search engines (Google, Yahoo/Bing) are smart enough to find your site. They will usually do it relatively quickly too. Search engine submission is a waste of time.

5. Same Title Tag Across Site – I see this so often. A business website will have the same title on each of their web pages, and usually it is the business name. You want to use keywords here, and you want to make sure that each page has a unique title tag so that they can individually rank in the search engines for different terms.

6. Keyword Stuffing – This is another tactic I see way too much, and I can’t believe it still happens. Writing your content with tons of keywords stuffed into it is not a good idea. First off, Google has been around for awhile it knows what keyword stuffing is and if your ratio is too high it will penalize you. Secondly, it is horrible for your readers. Write for your readers, not search engines.

7. Duplicate Content – This has always been an issue, Google tries not to rank two pages that are very similar so if your content is all duplicated from elsewhere you might be in trouble. Even worse news is very recently Google further tweaked its algorithm to make sure sites that were built entirely with duplicate content, or were full of useless content would be dropped from its rankings. It is estimated that around 12% of the Google rankings were affected.

While you won’t risk eternal damnation, you still need to avoid these deadly SEO sins. While you may not face Biblical consequences, you will face low Search Engine Optimization rankings and potentially risk being dropped from Google altogether.

John Mccarthy asked:

Recently I’ve run into situations where business owners seem surprised by my statement that the SEO campaign is going to be delayed by at least 2-3 months as their website is not SEO-ready. “What do you mean my site is not SEO-ready?”often replies the business owner, “I’ve just paid good money to have my site built”. And so begins one of my heart-to-heart conversations with the business owner that the adage of “if you build, they will come” does not really apply to Internet and search engine marketing. more

Site Architecture Issues

An SEO-ready website refers to a website that is ready to start an SEO campaign. The website will not require considerable re-programming, development or removal of barriers. Today most websites we encounter are dynamically generated websites in contrast to static websites. As late as 2005, it is true that search engines like Google had a challenge indexing dynamically generated websites, but no more. Search engines can easily index both static and dynamic websites provided best practices are followed. Where dynamically generated sites can create problems for SEO campaigns is in their database or content management system (CMS). Sometimes these databases produce multiple query string parameters that are so long that the search engine spiders are inhibited or worse yet they just cannot crawl the site.

In other situations the content management system is the culprit. We’ve seen situations where the content management system forces the website to have duplicate Title and Meta tags for every page in the site. In this situation the search engine often drops the pages from their index as this is perceived as duplicate content. Other CMS systems require the page name to duplicate the Title Tag, adds underscores, and other unfriendly SEO deficiencies or problems.

Page Construction

An SEO-ready website should have full support for standard on-page elements such as: Titles, Meta Tags, Headings, Image Alt Tags, etc. In at least 65% of the SEO audits we perform, the sites are missing Meta Tags or Headings. While it is true that these variables are not as important as they were in past, without them the site is clearly deficient compared to the top ranked sites and makes it that much more difficult to get well ranked. While they have improved significantly, ecommerce sites usually have the most deficiencies in terms of page construction problems.

Content

Content and link popularity continue to be major ranking factors in terms of keyword relevancy. An SEO-ready website should have enough content and link popularity compared to its peers to be considered “relevant”.

Recently we performed an SEO audit and found the client’s site had 200 pages of content. As expected the content was heavily product centric and did not have non-product oriented content. We also discovered the client content was duplicated elsewhere. It turns out the client enabled their affiliates to repurpose the product for their own use. While this helped the affiliates, it hurt the client as they lack unique content in order to differentiate their site from 1,200 affiliates.

A competitive analysis of the top ranked sites on Google, Yahoo and MSN found that the top 10 averaged 2,800 pages of content or 14 times more content. Most of the content from these sites were non-product centric. In fact 70% of the sites had blogs or forums, and a few had both.

Link Popularity

In terms of link popularity the same client site had 5,000 inbound links and a PageRank of 3 which on the surface sounds impressive. A link analysis found that of the 500 links, 69% of the links had anchor text that employed different versions of the company name and another 12% were image links. Less than 5% of the anchor text from the inbound links contained any keywords from the SEO campaign.

In contrast competitive analysis found the top ranked sites averaged 254,000 inbound links and a PageRank of 6. Yes, 254 thousand. These companies have been in business for years and as a result have built an amazing amount of links from product reviews, public relations, and trial promotions.

Web Server Configuration

An SEO-ready website does not require major time or resources to fix the web server. “What do you mean fix the web server?” questions a business owner. Whether you use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari – the browsers mask a lot of errors that originate from the web server. For example, we recently performed an SEO audit have found the site had implemented a URL rewrite but it was implemented incorrectly. As a result all the pages performed 302 redirects and will likely be interpreted by the search engines as a potentially fraudulent website. A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect – usually referencing that a page has moved temporarily. While this can occur from time to time, it is not a best practice that every single page in a site is temporarily redirected. Today we are monitoring over 20 issues that originate from web server configuration.

If your website is not SEO-ready, our first goal is to make the site ready for a successful SEO campaign. It is not uncommon for a website to have problems in all the above areas: Site Architecture, Page Construction, Content, Link Popularity and Web Server Configuration.

Making site architecture and page construction changes within static sites is often much easier than dynamically. Nonetheless, site architecture issues often take one to two months to implement. Page construction changes range from as little as a few hours to several weeks depending on the size of the site.

Webserver issues may take as little as 5 minutes or as long as 5 months. Yes, 5 months. We worked with a major company and it took 5 months to get a web server problem addressed. It took no less than 4 weeks for the client to confirm the problem internally, 6 weeks to determine if the problem could be resolved, and the balance to get the problem resolved and then in the queue for a site release.

For most clients, content and link deficiencies are the critical path to success. Usually developing content and links becomes an ongoing process.

For the average small to medium sized business, addressing Site Architecture, Page Construction, and Web Server Configuration issues take about 1-2 months. Content and links typically add another 2-4 months. Ideally these items would be implemented in parallel but often clients cannot dedicate enough internal staffing resources.

So make sure your site is SEO-ready. If you are not sure, invest in an SEO Audit. It often proves to be an excellent investment before starting an SEO campaign.

Jez Lister asked:

Introduction

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process that results in a website appearing higher up the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) on sites such as Google, Yahoo etc. As a result of a successful SEO campaign, visitors who are looking for your products or services will be directed to your website. SEO refers to Natural search queries as opposed to sponsored words or phrases. SEO should be viewed as a campaign rather than a single event. It takes time for SEO to work and it has to be maintained thereafter. A successful SEO campaign focuses on three key areas which are: -Keyword Analysis- identifying words and phrases that are relevant to your products and services. The objective is to find keywords and phrases which are searched for often but have little competition or don’t appear very often on other websites, -On-site optimization- makingsure that the target keywords and phrases stand out on your site so that the search engines can see them easily, Off-site optimization- Making your site look more important in the eyes of the search engines by increasing the number of relevant, quality links to your website from other quality websites.

Keyword Analysis

It is important that a set of Primary and Secondary keywords and Phrases are agreed which will form the basis of the SEO campaign. Once agreed these can then be liberally inserted into relevant places on the website to increase the relevance for those keywords and phrases. Primary keywords and phrases are those that appear often throughout your website. Secondary keywords and phrases are those that appear on specific pages or sections of the website. Generally speaking, the more words in a phrase the less the competition from other websites. However, it is also likely that there would be fewer people searching for these. It is no good being number one on Google for a phrase that nobody ever searches for and so a balance has to be reached. SEO consultants who claim they can get you to number 1 on Google aren’t lying; its just that the search term will be so obscure that nobody will ever use it. If you had a website dedicated to “purple spitting frogs”, you can be certain of a number one spot. Some keywords and phrases have so much competition that it would be very difficult to appear high up the SERP without a very large budget. Therefore, finding a niche is very important.

It is better to appear at the top of Google for a Keyword or phrase that only 500 people search for each month than on position 200 for a phrase that 50,000 people search for each month. Finding the right keywords and phrases therefore is the foundation for the whole SEO campaign. Here, we aim to come up with a list of 50 to 100 keywords and phrases against which we will analyze both the search frequency and the competition. From this we can use a statistical method for identifying the best selection that will give the best results. The following steps would be followed, some of which are iterative: – Analyze your existing website to identify words and phrases that already naturally appear, -Analyze your competitor’s websites to see what keywords and phrases they use. Tools exist to assist with this process -Come up with alternative phrases for these keywords e.g. “social housing consultants”, “social housing consultancy”, “social housing consulting”. Once again, tools exist to assist with this process -Come up with a good mix of 1,2,3 and 4 word phrases Once we have the list of keywords and phrases we can then use these to find out the number of searches made each month and the number of websites that contain these results. Once again, tools exist that assist in the process including Google’s own set of tools. At the end of this process we should have a set of key words and phrases that are to be the cornerstone of the SEO campaign but will continue to be refined over time. For example, to support new articles that appears on the website.

On-site Optimization

You wouldn’t expect to appear high up on the SERP for a word or phrase that doesn’t appear very often or not at all on your website. Therefore, in order to attract the attention of the search engines, we must ensure that our key words and phrases actually appear on the website. This will unfortunately involve some tweaks or even re-writes of pages or articles in order to thread these keywords and phrases into the website. There are several areas where these keywords and phrases should appear. Examples are: – Page Content including articles – Page Descriptions – the text that appears in the top of your browser when you visit a website. This is also used in some search engines in the search results. This information is added using “meta tags” which are hidden in the page source code. If the page is editable using a content management system (CMS) they can usually be edited directly – Keywords – Also hidden in meta tags and used by some search engines – URLs – it is better to have a page named “…/strategic-asset-management.html” than “…/page2.html Once again there are tools to help test the relevance of a page in terms of keywords and phrases. This is an iterative process and to some extent trial and error. The key thing is to keep the language as natural as possible whilst using the keywords and phrases as often as possible – without going overboard. Too much keyword density can result in search engines such as Google removing a site from their index, if it suspects foul play.

Off-Site Optimization

Google uses a voting system to rank websites and pages in order of importance when deciding which pages to show at the top of the SERP. It is not the case that the site with the most keywords gets to the top. It all depends on how important and relevant your website is for those keywords in the opinion of the search engine. The specific algorithms used by search engines are trade secrets and are always being refined, but generally Google works as follows: Each link back to a page on your website counts as a vote. You could therefore argue that the more links you have the better and this is partly true. However, Google is also interested in how relevant that link is. It can tell if the website linking to yours has similar key words and phrases which is therefore more relevant. Finally, if the website containing the back link has a high Page Rank this also adds weight. For example, if the BBC or Times Online (High Page Rank) ran an article on Social Housing and had the link social housing to a website about social housing, this would increase the importance of that site for that key phrase. Therefore, it is not so much the number of links that counts as the quality and relevance of the links. That said, the more quality and relevant links you have, the higher up you will get. There is one last thing to say about back links. There are some back links you don’t want to have. For example, just as a back link from the BBC carries weight, a back link from some black-listed sites will damage your rankings. Google know that some disreputable “black hat” SEO consultants trade links to boost their rankings. Once Google discovers such a site (or someone reports such a site), the site can be removed from its index.

Daniel Ragnarsson asked:

What Is SEO?

Hey, There are too many people out there that are unaware of SEO, or Search Engine Optimization which SEO stands for.

SEO is basically ranking well in the search engines, there are loads of different sections in SEO but there’s basically two different groups, Onpage SEO, and Offpage SEO.

Onpage SEO:

The online SEO is basically your keyword density, your tags, and your h1/h2/h3 titles.

Keyword density is the percent of which your main keyword appears in the article, if your article is a thousand words and your keyword appears 15 times then that’s a keyword density of 1.5%. Your keyword density should be around 1-2%, don’t over do it because that just doesn’t work.

Keep in mind to have relevant tags, like if your writing an article about how awesome video marketing is, then you should think twice about having “Article Marketing” as one of your tags, it could work depending on which points you’re making in the video, but try to keep the tags to your niche.

Offpage SEO:

Offpage SEO is basically backlinks. Creating backlinks with your keyword is the anchor text is just about everything you need to do, you should also get keyword from sites related to your. If you’re writing about cars then you should get backlinks from cars and not from sites about writing books.

Try to get backlinks from sites with high PR, PageRank. The higher the page rank is, the more value the link will have to your site. A site with a page rank of 4 will be worth a few thousand backlinks from a site with a page rank of 0.

Links from .EDU and .GOV sites tend to have more link juice. Google trust these sites more than regular.com/.info/.org/.net. So if you got a link from one of these then good game, you’ll rank higher.

So in short, get page rank 10 sites from .GOV sites related to your niche;).

SEO is easily the most popular way to drive traffic to your website, I would say that the reason for this is that it’s free. You can of course outsource most of your work but if you’re new to SEO then I would recommend that you do the work yourself so you get to know how it works.

The better your website is, the higher ranking you’ll receive in the search engines. And if you rank high in the search engines, you’ll get sales.

Michael Anthony Paul Anderson asked:

I am often asked “where can I find an SEO consultant?” by people who want help with their websites. As an SEO consultant myself this is an easy question to answer! But many people aren’t entirely sure what SEO is let alone what an SEO consultant does.

Quite simply SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’. It’s a rather pretentious phrase which is about getting your website easily found by the search engines. Ultimately it is about getting your site to be found higher up the search results than any of your competitors. That’s why business attracting traffic online get very excited about it and very competitive.

If you want to ‘SEO’ your pages it’s usually best to ask an SEO consultant but you can also have a go yourself. There are lots of things you can do to achieve this. If you have a site already then you may be compromised by what you’ve done to it already but essentially here are 10 things an SEO consultant would advise that you be thinking about:

1. Relevant content – it’s true that ‘content is king’ if your site is not giving good content value then it will not be optimised as much as it could be. Make sure it’s relevant to the searcher.
2. Title-tag – this is the name of the page that is live. Take a look at the source code, the ‘title tag’ at the top is one of the first things the search engine sees when looking for a relevant result for someone’s search. Name the file after your keyword. It’s not as powerful as it used to be but it’s not unimportant.
3. URL- try to make the title of your site (URL) the same as your main keyword/s. This can be very difficult but there are ways round this even if you think the URL name has already been taken. Split your main words with hyphens – EG if dogtraining.com is taken try dog-training.com
4. Meta-tags These are keywords in your copy that define the content of your page and make sure these correspond with keywords that are being typed in
5. H1 Heading – on your landing page, make sure that the first piece of text is your keyword and make sure it is in H1 text
6. Sub-heading – likewise make sure that your sub-heading is also the same keyword but this time in H2 text
7. Copy – put your keyword several times in the copy on your page. But don’t stuff the page
8. Site map – have a site map. This will help Google to know and order what is among your pages
9. backlinks – arguably this is probably one of the most important aspects of SEO. It is possible to trump all the above with backlinks from high authority sites
10. Links on page – Make sure the links you have on your page (if any) point to good relevant content (preferably on your own site)
11. Longevity – Google considers the age of your site as important. There isn’t much you can do about this if your site is new. But as time goes on obviously you will score better on this.

There are lots of other things you can do both on site and off site to SEO your content. If you want to learn about this then that’s what an SEO consultant would help with.
