When you are first deciding on online marketing in order to promote your business online, the main online marketing methods that you will encounter are Organicsearch engine optimisation and Pay per click advertising such as Google Adwords.

Organic search engine optimisation and Pay pr click advertising are the two main methods of online marketing. Both these forms of online marketing are aimed at getting highly targeted visitors to your website by making your website rank on search engine results for the keywords that you are targeting.

Ideally a business needs to utilise both in order to get the maximum exposure for their business online. However cost and budget considerations often result in a business having to make a choice between the two.

Organic search engine optimisation refers to the search results that appear in the main centre section of the search results. Ranking within organic search engine results cannot be bought and ranking is a result of organic non-biased steps taken over a period of time. It is dependent on the overall popularity of your website on the internet in general among other on site factors. Organic listings are the results that appear in the main section of a search engine such as Google when we search for something. Pay per click advertising on the other hand refers to the paid listing or sponsored results that appear on the right of the search results page and not in main middle section of the page.

Pay per click result is paid for and results are almost immediate to achieve. However there are many drawbacks. The recent years have seen an exponential rise in competition and a steep rise in pay per click costs. Click fraud is another rising concern where an advertiser may be charged for clicks that are not by genuine customers.

1) Many surveys and search engine marketing studies have pointed than users are more likely to click on organic search results that appear on the main section of the page rather than the paid listings that appear as ads on the right.

2) Organic listings are non-biased and cannot be bought. As such users trust the results more than the paid listings which are a result of paid advertising. The conversion rate for organic listings is much higher than for paid listings.

3) Rising cost of pay per click. Pay per click campaigns are becoming more and expensive day by day as competition is increasing. It is common now a days to be pay as much as £1 or £2 per click for a op 5 position in pay per click campaigns like Google ad words.

4) The results of organic search engine optimisation campaign are more permanent that pay per click. In pay per click the results stop almost immediately at the end of the campaign whereas in organic listings the rank remains.

Pay per click advertising also has its advantages and is a much quicker way to get results. This is useful to advertise events and other marketing campaigns that cannot be planned months in advance. Organic search engine optimisation is a time consuming task and listings often take months to achieve.

In the long run investing an organic search engine optimisationis beneficial and vital in website marketing. It has lower costs and offers a high return on investment. Once a favourable ranking has been achieved it is more permanent. In pay per click the results will stop immediately when the payment has stopped and the campaign comes to an end. Organic search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign also has a wider coverage and generates maximum exposure for your business.

Any organic campaign in order to achieve first page rank in Google will focus on a variety of techniques not only submission to search engines, e.g. directory submissions, press releases, article marketing and social media marketing. All this is important in order to generate quality back links to your website and will most certainly be covered in any organic search engine campaign that is run on behalf of your website.

Organic search engine optimisation is hence a better rounded approach to online marketing and has a much wider coverage. Although you may not see the result within the first few months it will be an extremely useful marketing investment for any business. The benefits of an organic search engine optimisation far outweigh any risks involved with investing in a one year organic search engine optimisation campaign.

Over the past decade more and more people are getting fired, getting downsized, or getting fed up with their corporate jobs and embark on the journey as a small business owner. Unfortunately, most of the new small business owners fail to consider their marketing plans or strategy. There are many marketing concepts for small business marketing to consider and plan for, but here is our list of Top 10 Marketing Concepts For Small Business Marketing.

Marketing Concept # 1: Consistency

Consistency is the number one marketing concept for small business marketing only because it is left out of marketing concepts for so many businesses. I have worked with a long list of clients, big and small, that are extremely inconsistent in all areas of their marketing. Consistency helps lower the cost of marketing and increase the effectiveness of branding.

Marketing Concept # 2: Planning

Once small business owners decide to be consistent with their marketing, planning is the next major concept to engage. Planning is the most vital part of small business marketing or any level of marketing, for that matter, and so many owners, marketing managers, and even CMOs plan poorly. Put the time into planning your marketing strategy, budget, and other concepts presented here to ensure success.

Marketing Concept # 3: Strategy

Strategy immediately follows planning because your strategy is the foundation for the rest of your marketing activities. In the process of planning, you must develop your strategy: who you will target, how you will target them, and how will you keep them as a customer.

Marketing Concept # 4: Target Market

Target market is also another key concept for small business marketing. Defining exactly who you are targeting allows small business owners to focus on specific customers and reduce marketing waste. A well-defined target market will make every other marketing concept so much easier to implement successfully.

Marketing Concept # 5: Budget

Although it is listed at number 5, budgeting is important throughout the entire process. Creating a marketing budget is usually the hardest and most inaccurate part of small business marketing. Most small businesses owners lack a great deal of experience in marketing, so their budgets usually end up skewed. The most important part of this marketing concept is to actually establish a marketing budget. From there, you can worry about how to distribute your available funds.

Marketing Concept # 6: Marketing Mix

The marketing mix is usually defined as product, pricing, place, and promotion. As a small business owner, you must specifically decide on your products (or services), the appropriate pricing, where and how you will distribute your products, and how will you let everyone know about you and your products.

Marketing Concept # 7: Website

In today’s market, a business of any size must have a website. I hate when I see businesses that have a one page website with out-dated information. Customers, be it businesses or consumers, will search the web over 60% of the time before making any purchasing decisions. This marketing concept contains a slew of additional components, but you must at least develop a small web presence of some kind and keep it updated.

Marketing Concept # 8: Branding

Many small businesses owners also neglect this concept. Small business marketing must focus on this marketing concept just as much as large corporations do. Branding consists of the pictures, logo, design scheme, layout, make up, and image of your products and even your company. Branding is how your customers perceive (please place a lot of emphasis on that word!) your products and company. Make sure to pay special attention to what kind of brand you are building through each step of your planning and implementation.

Marketing Concept # 9: Promotion and Advertising

Promotion and advertising is a very complex marketing concept, but must be considered for any type of business and its products and services. Once you engage the previous 8 marketing concepts, you must finally let your target market know about you and your products. Proper promotion and advertising will result in effective brand recognition, and, ultimately, increased sales.

Marketing Concept # 10: Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

The concept of customer relationship management has become a huge industry in the marketing world. There are many types of software and services offered to help businesses of any size handle their customer relationship management. Since there is so much available, usually for a large sum of money, small business owners usually look at this concept as something they are not big enough for or have enough money to implement. Don’t be fooled by the massive industry that has evolved from this concept. Maintaining proper customer relationship management is essential to creating loyal and consistent customers.

This list of marketing concepts should be examined, researched, planned, and implemented, especially by small businesses, in order to be successful. Also, your marketing doesn’t stop here. Each business is unique and will have additional components that must be considered, but this list will jump-start any marketing plan.

All companies are trying to find out how to get the most out of organic search traffic. Yet, sometimes it just seems like no matter what you do, you’re not getting ranked any higher than page 10 or 15 on a google search. You read around a little bit and find out about SEO, and just wonder what it is and why your Philadelphia skateboard shop is on page 15 of a search for philadelphia skateboard shop.

Why? Well there are about 4 main things that you need to be optimized, and there’s a good chance you don’t have any of them working for you.  So here’s a brief list of how to help get your site search-ready for some good old DIY Search Engine Optimization. Of course this won’t jump you up to number one, but it should get you off on a good foot and maybe show you how important organic search really is.

Step 1. Check your tags.

No, not on your car, but your meta-tags. You know that think at the top that probably says UNTITLED right now. That should say exactly what your site and page is about. Use keywords. Are you using anchor text the right way? Instead of using a click (here) with the “here” linked up, put a phrase to click on.

Step 2. Know your keywords.

If you’re focusing on selling skateboards online, then by god, talk about skateboards online. You need to know what keywords your customers are looking for and get them in the mix. But don’t just throw random words together, it has to make sense still. Just google what you want to be number one in and take a look at their content and keyword use. It’s not cheating, it’s learning!

Step 3. Increase the content.

No one gets up to number one by having a page with 10 words on it. In Search Engine Optimization, content is king these days, so start writing. Take the time to write some really good content, and lots of it. In-depth descriptions of your products, featured posts related to your site and industry. If you are indeed selling those skateboards, why not post a blog on some of the newer brands that are coming out that you happen to stock? Just more content to put on your site chock full of relevant keywords. That’s one of the core ideas of SEO.

Step 4. Get those backlinks

There are so many top sites that can give you great one-way backlinks. You should certainly take advantage of what the the social bookmarking sites and public blogging sites have to offer. Also, contributing content to sites in your industry is a great way to begin building up your search engine popularity.

Hopefully this can help you get off to a good start on at least understanding how to optimize your site for search engines. If you are really trying to make an impact, hiring a professional SEO consultant wouldn’t be a bad idea, but if you’re on a shoestring budget just trying to get off the ground, these tips can certainly help you out. Good luck on your new adventure in trying to navigate the wonderful world of SEO.

The next installment will be some tips on how to start getting involved in DIY social media marketing for your small business.

Joseph Sanders asked:

Entering the SEO business was never difficult for me, because I myself enjoyed the benefits that SEO can bring. I’d already heard about SEO back then, but I never considered SEO as a tool for our company’s advertising and product promotions. My website was at the top of search engine results pages and I already had a stable income. My chicken processing business and my poultry plant were both doing well; I thought that they were well-established and nothing could bring them down. I was more than a hundred percent confident of my business, until bird flu came.

It was 2004 when Avian flu hit Australia. Although our company was labeled by government agencies and some major independent agricultural bodies as “Bird Flu Free”, our company still suffered major revenue loss. The global pandemic alarmed consumers around the world. We lost major clients that resulted in a sweeping loss of employees.

We did everything we could. We safeguarded our poultry farms with precautionary scientific and agricultural methods. We also had to indicate these on our products’ packaging, hoping that consumers might change their mind. We failed, and our company almost closed down.

Fortunately, a friend from the US called to inform me about an upcoming reunion. We exchanged pleasantries, like former classmates would. In that short call, I learned that he was doing SEO projects, (SEO Reseller to be exact) and as we talked, I shared what was happening to my business. I was so surprised that he was unaware of the avian flu pandemic. He also said that there was no such problem in the US, and that Americans were still enjoying their typical Thanksgiving turkey parties. He concluded the phone call with a promise of helping me the moment I arrive in the United States.

I relocated to the USA and realigned my business. I started from scratch and treated my business like it was just starting out. I included SEO in my marketing strategies, furnishing my website with SEO-friendly articles and videos to convince people that my products were safe from bird flu. With the help of this SEO Reseller friend, I was able to revive my chicken processing company without the efforts of drastically changing my labels and packaging. I implemented some minor changes, but the advertising was all done through SEO.

After two years, as my company soared high once again, my friend and I teamed up and founded a small corporation. It may sound absurd, but we built a corporation that specializes in meat processing products and the SEO industry. Yes, unbelievably, we are able to use this story to encourage people to include SEO in their business.

Small business marketing ideas you’d think would be a dime a dozen yet it is the most frequently asked question that I get. Getting ideas are not the problem. What is hard on the brain is finding something that ten millions others haven’t thought of.

Here are 5 ideas that almost no one thinks about or has even heard of in some cases:

Google Zeitgeist:
The first thing that comes to mind is, “Huh?”. It is a German term which refers to “signs of the times”. Google uses it as a term to describe what the hottest searches are in any given moment. In other words, where are peoples’ minds? It is a great source of small business marketing ideas. Most of the time the top searches are on movie stars or sports figures that have done something they shouldn’t have and so forth. Keywording will be easy. You can get great ideas from this and you know that the subject is already hot because the Zeitgeist list tells you so. What a great source of small business ideas! You don’t care about sports or movie figures? That’s alright. Sometimes the top search traffic is about the IRS or how to survive a multi day power outage. Come up with any product unique to the subject and you have an automatic hot market. (In the millions, usually)

Rentals:

You can use the list above to see which are the hottest movies or which new video game is getting all kinds of inquiries about it. Many small business marketing ideas will come as you write a product review or open a small web site, become an affiliate for a movie company, record label or game company and start selling. Again, you know the market is hot because search volumes are high. You can make it even hotter for your business using a good CPC campaign.

People are asking a lot about items on the zeitgeist. Most of them have their credit cards firmly clamped between their teeth. Make sure your little site, if you have one, is SEO’d properly and you’re off to the races!

What are your passions?:
This is an old, tried and true method of succeeding. It is one of the best small business marketing ideas ever. What are you really passionate about? Are you brought to tears when you hear of the plight of the Darfur rape victims? Famine and world hunger bring you to your knees? You maybe love radio controlled airplanes. Golf keeps you awake most nights. (I’m NOT implying that golfers or radio airplane enthusiasts don’t care about important issues!) Whatever makes your heart pound, you can create a successful online venture for yourself. How can you make money, still feel good about yourself and have a clear conscience when dealing with things like world hunger? There are many ways and there is nothing wrong making a living funneling world attention and money on something that you love. Read the following idea and get information on affiliate programs. Remember the good Samaritan of the bible? He could help the guy on the side of the road because he had money. You can do whatever you want with the money you make.

Create your own online bookstore:
No matter what your interest, you can create a tightly focused specialty bookstore. Places like Amazon.com and Chapters.ca and so forth all have affiliate programs. How can you help the starving people in Africa, lets say? Design your bookstore to take your visitors to history books of Africa so they can learn how all this came about. Set up a part of your store on nutrition and what these people need. Set up another section on the heroes and saints of these people (who ever you see as hero. It’s your store, you decide.) Love nature and want to do your share? Here are some small business marketing ideas that most people don’t realize can be created. Promote places like the Sierra Club on your site. Promote books on everything from bird watching to the ravaging of the planet. SEO the site properly and you will have oodles of traffic. Build your pages properly and you will have an immense positive impact on whatever stirs your stew. On the web, you can focus your business intensely like a laser on any small business marketing ideas you choose.

What do you know?:
If you are a plumber, create ebooks on plumbing repairs. Sell easy to make videos on how to fix a leak. You love to knit? Give courses on knitting, sell specialty yarns and yes, make and sell your own easy to make videos. You love to rebuild 1971 Mustangs? Just think of it… Mikes-famous-mustang-rebuilders.com!! Does this open a floodgate of small business marketing ideas for you? You are a brain surgeon who loves to do research on nutrition to help brain cancer patients. Build a site, SEO it and run with it. Keep yourself happy, make money and improve the plight of some mighty unfortunate people.

I could go on forever, but I’m getting writers’ cramp. The internet is a river of gold. With that gold you can build your dream home, have the wardrobe of your dreams, do an incredible amount of good and what kind of price can you put on satisfaction with your life?

Make yourself a list of small business ideas and keep it handy where you can easily get at it to add, take away from or change what’s on there. Go with the premise that nothing is impossible because nothing is impossible.

Angela J Parker asked:

What is SEO? A large number of people are still unable to understand the true meaning of this term, it’s not a myth but I have personally observed about SEO is that as many companies are offering SEO services for big products or very intense marketing, people who try to search for it are normally unable to understand that it is not that hard as it looks like, anyone who knows that how to build a website can do SEO for his own website. Today we will discuss small things that can make SEO a very simple and easy process to understand and to work upon.

1) The content of your website should be user-friendly where user friendly means that it should be written in a manner where it is understandable by the people who visit your website.

2) There should be no grammatical mistakes in your text as it gives a very bad impression to the visitors of the website and it hurts the ranking of your website while the google bots crawl on your website.

3) Every website that sells something should have a clear refund policy written on the website.

4) To make sure that your customers trust you, please make sure that you have a About Us page on your website as this page makes your website trustworthy and people are more comfortable to place their orders.

5) Blogging is one of the most important aspect of SEO, start blogging but not in a manner that it looks like spam, remember that search engines, especially google loves blogs and it also helps you to bring more traffic to your website for free.

6) Once you write your own blog, remember to comment on other’s blogs as this is the easiest way to let others know that you also exist and probability that others will comment on your blogs and/or start following your blogs will increase.

7) Write articles about the products that your offer, its free and simple but remember that search engines including google pick these articles quickly in their rankings and this can bring more traffic to your website then you can expect.

8) People who follow your blogs or pick your articles, start paying more attention towards them and assure that you comment on their blogs or give them extra content.

9) Start to share your articles and blogs on other webmasters.

10) Tell your friends to visit your article and if they find that information good, then ask them to use it as references.

11) 1 very important but very simple way to get free submission is to find a list of directories which are allowing free submissions like DMOZ.

12) With the submission of your website in unpaid directories you should also try to submit your website to paid directories.

13) A friend in need is a friend in deed, so start calling your friends and tell them to tag your website on social networks, as when they will do that other bloggers will also start doing it for you.

14) Join Better Business Bureau to improve the credibility of your name and company.

15) Website of your local chamber of commerce is very important, so get a link from it and you will definitely improve in the web ranking.

16) Submit the link of your website in local listings of your city and state.

17) List your website in the website of your local county’s library

18) Try to get links from your business partners, retailers and/or manufacturers of your product, which will enhance the number of visitors plus the credibility of your company.

19) Once you are done with the website, launch an affiliate program, this thing might not help you to get a large number of links which may help you initially or provide you links with some good SEO value but they will obviously result with more link requests coming in future out of which few will be definitely important and having SEO value.

20) Try to use yahoo answers as a potential traffic bringing platform as many people search for a variety of stuff on it, by answering them correctly and not doing SPAMMING on it, you will be able to bring a lot of traffic on your website.

21) Use Google Groups and provide the link of your website where you think that will attract someone to visit your website.

22) If you are doing a real business then try to write about it on http://wikipedia.org remember that millions of people visit Wikipedia every day and articles written on Wikipedia are ranked very high on every search engine.

23) A majority of forums allow their members to leave signature links and/or personal profile links, a major quantity of people will visit those links if your content is not spammy is worthy to read. This will bring more traffic to your website and increase your sales volume.

24) Use amazon.com and other online stores where most of them are free to use, this will not just help you to bring direct customers but also secondary links

25) Another very simple and successful tip is to sell on www.eBay.com and offer to donate a particular amount of your profit to charity and you will find a lot of charity websites offering link exchange.

Neeraj Arora asked:

The Basics

Organic SEO the oretically can save you expenses related to advertising, but you have to take a call because SEO requirements can also oblige you to hire professionals. Advertising requires constant investment, while organic SEO is a one-time investment over a period of a few months. Since Google started auctioning popular keywords to top bidders, advertising is no longer profitable for small businesses.

Advantages of Organic SEO

1. Organic SEO techniques draw more traffic than advertising.
2. Organic SEO techniques reward relevant content, not advertising gimmicks.
3. Because customers are wary of advertised products, they rely more on search engine results to guide them to a relevant website. Therefore, if your website shows up among top search engine results, you win their trust.

Techniques That Work

A good SEO expert can be very useful if you are serious about how your website is ranked on Google, Yahoo, or MSN searches. However, you must always hire an ethical SEO. SEO is not magic and there are no one-size-fits-all formulas here. Each website has different SEO requirements depending on the target audience, nature of website, and budget allocation.

1.Content – Content is king. You do not have to be an SEO magician to be able to generate good content. You do need to be an expert in your business area though, while the ability to draw people in through writing is a bonus. If you are not a writer, hire experts. Content also refers to graphics, design, and various applications on your site.

2.Keywords – The first parameter is the nature of keywords and their variations. When web surfers look for information on vacuum hoses, chances are they will also look up “vacuum cleaners”, “cheap vacuum cleaners”, and “home appliances”. Being creative helps. The next parameter is keyword density. Remember that Google penalizes pages with a keyword density of more than 5 percent.

3.Site Navigation – Good site navigation invites visitors to explore the website further; poor site navigation sends them off to other websites, probably your competitors’.

4.Other factors – The other organic SEO techniques include extensive page interlinking, robot txt files, meta tags, and URL tweaking.

Organic SEO techniques require hard work, creativity, and diligence. However, if your website is genuine and you are not afraid of being scrutinized for relevance, organic SEO might turn out to be the more rewarding option for you.

Marc Mays asked:

In the first of this four-part series, we will consider one of the most important considerations for analysis of the marketing efforts of a small business. A small business’ strengths are the first part of a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis, and reveal where the business has competitive advantages. Here are some of the areas where a business may enjoy strengths relative to its competitors:

Lower prices Variety of payment options / terms Better product or service selection or quality Closer geographic location More convenient hours of operation Better customer service Tiered customer reward programs Superior brand identity Favorable legal protections Innovative functions not yet adopted by competitors Extensive technical knowledge Trade secrets Patented processes or features

The above list is in order, from least sustainable strengths, to most sustainable. In other words, as one goes down the list, it becomes significantly more difficult for competitors to negate each strength. Accordingly, a business should seek to develop as many of these strengths as possible, paying special attention to those which are highly valued by its customers. It is equally important to recognize what a close competitor’s strengths are, and to avoid emphasizing these strengths in communications with customers.

Frequently, if the competitor’s strength(s) are not mentioned, they may not even occur as being worthy of consideration. However, when a particular competitor’s strength is critical to the best interests of a customer, the ethical thing to do is to acknowledge that the customer may be better served by the competition. Winning these customers over is then a matter of surpassing the competitor’s strength, or finding other strengths which can make up for this point of relative weakness.

If this can not be done, then these customers are best left to competitors as they will be much more difficult to lure away. Finally, if there are any doubts as to what the most relevant strengths are, it is best to simply ask your customers, or to look at product (or service) reviews to see what customers respond favorably towards. Although perception is not always reflective of reality, a customer’s perception does shape reality for them, particularly when it comes time to make a buying decision. Having the right set of strengths makes it more likely that customers’ buying decisions will favor your product or service instead of the competition.
